Recently I did something a little out of the box from your typical direct mail promo piece. With my wife Vanessa lending her amazing design skills, we created 15″x20″ screen printed posters derived from three of my recent photographs and sent to a very selective group of prospects and recent clients. The concept was inspired by mid-century pop art as well as band posters advertising upcoming shows. I wanted the posters to have a “collector’s item” feel so I made a very limited run, signed, and numbered them. It also made sense to make them large (but not too large) so that the recipient would say, “Hey, this is really awesome… I just can’t throw this in the trash!”. Keeping the packaging a little raw and hand-made gave it an extra personal touch. I will say it was a rather bold move sending out to only 50 people and not 2,000. But these are prospects I really respect and want to work with in the future. Plus it gave me a chance to play with a spray paint can which is always cool.
I’ve had a great response so far and have heard from some that they have hung the posters in their office space. A few in-person portfolio showings hasn’t hurt either. Looking forward to the next one!
