A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to land a great job with advertising and PR agency French West Vaughn for Arena Swimwear USA. The assignment focused on shooting Arena’s latest high performance swim suits, warm-up clothes, and training gear featuring Olympic athletes who are sponsored by the company: Janet Evans, Rebecca Soni, and Eric Shanteau. These inspiring heroes are the true meaning of Olympians and were a pleasure to work with. A second focus of the shoot was photographing Janet with two kids for Swim America, a non-profit organization that promotes learning to swim for people of all ages.
I was honored and humbled to meet and photograph these amazing athletes as each have amazing backstories. Four-time gold medalist Janet Evans held the women’s 800m freestyle world record for 18 years (8:16:22), as well as carrying the Olympic torch (passing to Muhammad Ali) in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She is now making a comeback at age 40 (read NY Times article). Eric Shanteau is a world champion and cancer survivor, while Rebecca Soni (whose breaststroke is dissected on ESPN’s Sports Science) went from heart surgery to gold medal in Beijing. Keep an eye out for them at the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
The two-day shoot took place at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA. We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather. The second day was a little more hectic as we had to work around a video crew. But I had a solid team and we got the job done. I look forward to watching these swimmers compete this summer as I’ve now seen first hand what they’re capable of. In the words of Stevie Wonder… “Stay Gold”.
